  • Job Description

Machine Learning and AI are changing how Amazon operates, from drones to stores without checkout lines, and enables Amazon to launch new devices, such as Alexa. Core AI is Amazon's central science team working on tools to democratize machine learning, kick-starting new teams developing ML-based products and betting on a small number of long-term projects with substantial research risk.

The team is global, composed of a balanced mix of scientists and engineers who push the boundaries of machine intelligence and work on tangible problems that directly impact customers. The team is also part of the Apache MXNet developer community. Apache MXNet is an open-source deep-learning framework, endorsed by Amazon Web Service (AWS).
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work in close collaboration with applied scientists, accelerate experimentation and facilitate path to production of the research prototypes. You will also work across the deep learning stack from core algorithmic contributions to applications. You will engage with Amazon-internal teams on their advanced machine learning learning use cases.

We are looking for a software engineer who combines technical, communication, and analytical capabilities with a demonstrated ability to work independently with scientists and engineers. The ideal candidate embraces infrastructure and automation, and is motivated by the prospect of engineering excellence, balanced with a healthy sense of pragmatism, and not afraid of ambiguity.

As a Senior Software Developer, you work efficiently and routinely deliver the right things with limited guidance. Your work focuses on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new software initiatives. You take a long-term view of your team’s software. You understand the business impact of your systems and show good judgment when making technical trade-offs between your team’s short-term technology and long-term business needs. You bring perspective and provide context for current technology choices and guide future technology choices. You understand that not all problems are new (or require new software). Your solutions are inventive, secure, easily maintainable, appropriately scalable, and extensible. You write software that is easy for others to contribute to.

You drive engineering best practices and set standards. When confronted with discordant views, you are able to find the best way forward and influence others to follow that path. You actively recruit and help others leverage your expertise, by coaching and mentoring in your organization.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science
    • 7+ years of software development, validation and deployment experience
    • 5+ years of experience in programming parallel and distributed systems

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Developer experience with Machine Learning or Deep Learning frameworks and applications.
