Job Description

Amazon Japan is looking for a talented paralegal or compliance specialist for the product regulation space to fill a newly opened position in our Japan Legal Retail legal team, reporting to a Corporate Counsel in Japan.
This position, based in our Meguro Headquarters in Tokyo, will support our rapidly expanding global retail businesses. As part of our dynamic global legal team, you will work with our lawyers, contract managers and compliance specialists and business partners locally in Japan and overseas, including in Seattle, to develop innovative ways to grow and move selection across Amazon’s global websites and beyond, including researching and analyzing complex regulations and helping lawyers and the business to make decisions based on that analysis. You will also support various other Retail activities, as required. You will be an integral part of the business teams you support, giving input on business and strategy in addition to providing day-to-day compliance support.
You don’t need to have a legal qualification or law degree to be the right person for this role, although that would be helpful. You will need to have strong prior work experience, a flexible attitude and great organizational skills. In addition, you must be a strong written and verbal communicator, in both English and Japanese, with great attention to detail, and must be able to work independently in a constantly changing and sometimes ambiguous environment. You will also need common sense and great judgment. This position involves working with lawyers, business partners and external parties.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a leading Japanese or non-Japanese university
  • 5+ years of work experience and a degree in law, business or other relevant field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills – Native Japanese and business level English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience researching, analyzing and synthesizing regulations
  • Prior work experience with a law firm, legal or compliance department, government agency or Japanese subsidiary of a large U.S. multi-national in a relevant industry
  • Prior work experience dealing with a broad range of product compliance issues, such as Japanese regulations under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act, Consumer Products Safety Act, and others.
  • Sound and practical business judgment as well as common sense, creativity, curiosity, enthusiasm, and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Some trade or product compliance experience is a plus, but not required
